It looks out to Godrevy lighthouse and so faces East. This means that it is usually more sheltered from the wind than some of the other beaches.
The sea is usually fairly calm here, but there is sometimes a shelf which can make it a bit tricky for young children.
There are some lovely rocks and pools to explore a low tide.
It is not unusual for a big seal to be seen playing around the rocks on the Island side of the beach. If you see him, please keep your distance as, for all his good looks and charm, he is a wild animal!
Getting To Porthgwidden Beach
From St Ives Harbour, follow the signs to The Island car park, across Back Road West.
Alternatively, follow the coast path round from Smeaton’s Pier, past Bamaluz Beach and round to Porthgwidden Beach.
Porthgwidden Beach is right by The Island car park.
Access Onto Porthgwidden Beach
There are 3 main access points to get down onto Porthgwidden Beach. The main one is down the rather steep slipway, right next to the Porthgwidden Beach cafe. You can also get down to the beach from The Island, down some steps, and from the opposite side, again down some steps. Both of these steps are rather tricky and worn, so don't use them if you are not steady on your feet!
Facilities On Porthgwidden Beach
Toilets: there are public toilets at the top of the slope by The Island Car Park
Car Park: there is a fairly big car park at the top of the hill behind Porthgwidden Beach called The Island car park. It does require you driving all the way though town, which isn’t for the faint-hearted!
Food & Drink: there is the fabulous Porthgwidden Beach Cafe overlooking the beach. Underneath the cafe is a takeaway which does sandwiches, chips, drinks and ice cream.
Lifeguard: there is NO LIFEGUARD on Porthgwidden Beach.
Dogs: There is a seasonal dog ban on Porthgwidden Beach.
Beach Huts: you can hire beach huts at Porthgwidden Beach.
