The real name of this park is Palemon Best Recreation Ground. What an unusual name! The land was left to the town of St Ives by Dr Palemon Best (died 1927). Dr Best practised medicine in St Ives and was the medical officer to the Admiralty and Poor Law Guardians, as well as Public Vaccinator. The land was given as an open space with free access to the public. Hence the name Palemon Best Recreation Area. It is a bit of a mouth full though and most people I know call it Penbeagle Park!
Penbeagle Park is half way up Penbeagle Lane, near the Fire Station off The Stennack.
There are 4 main areas to Penbeagle Park:
1. The Main Play Park
The main play park is at the front of the recreation area, near the little car park. It is really well equipped for both babies and older children.
- a baby swing and climbing frame
- a big slide built into the hill
- a roundabout
- a big climbing frame with a tube slide
- balancing things
- normal swings
- a zip wire
2. The Big Field
To the side of the play park is a big field for ball games.
3. The Skate Park
Behind the play park is the skate park. This is in the process of being re-designed. Money is currently being raised to build a really fabulous new skate park.
4. The Community Orchard
Tucked at the back of the park is the lovely St Ives Community Orchard. This is a community run project with over 150 fruit trees, beehives, wildflower planting and wildlife habitats. They hold regular volunteer work parties and community events such as Apple Day and Wassailing.
There are lots of areas and walks to take dogs and also bridal paths to hack horses.
