A Cornish Bonfire Night with a Seaside Twist
Hello dear reader! If you’re planning to be in St Ives this November and want to celebrate bonfire night, come along to Porthminster Beach.
This year (and every year) the local community gets together for a bit of spark, crackle and pop at Porthminster Beach, and it’s just the kind of event you want if you’re after coastal cool meets traditional Bonfire Night fun.
Here’s the low‐down on what to expect, how to plan it, and a few things to keep in mind if you’re bringing along furry friends.
🎇 What to Expect
This year (2025) it is being held on Wednesday 5th November.
The event is held at Porthminster Beach, St Ives, and it starts from around 5:30 pm, with the fireworks themselves typically around 7:00 pm.
It’s a fundraiser, organised by the community (the local football club) rather than a slick big-corporate show. That gives it that lovely friendly, local-vibe.
Expect a fireworks (usually there isn't an actual bonfire), food and drink stalls (hot chocolate? mulled cider? why not).
Remember you are at the seaside! So wrap up warm: sea breeze + evening chill = cosy layers required.
The setting is quite spectacular: fireworks over the bay, reflected in the sea, crowd on the beach or the promenade. It’s definitely one of those “ahhhh” moments you’ll remember.
No ticket needed, just show up, and likely make a donation. It is to raise funds for a local charity.
Tip:
Things start to get going about 5:30pm. If you get there earlyish can choose a spot with a view of the water, maybe settle on a blanket or bring a folding chair. You can always pop into a nearby cafe beforehand to warm up, then head to the beach once it’s getting dark.
Lots of people line up along the top walkway (The Warren part) and sit on benches up there. These get taken pretty quickly, so if you are wanting a seat, get there early.
Dogs
The fireworks are loud. The setting on Porthminster Beach really amplifies the booms and bangs. If your dog is jumpy or noise-sensitive, the beach event might be too much.
Consider skipping the closer vantage point if you think the sound/flash will upset them; a little further back may be less intense. You can see the Porthminster fireworks from all sorts of places, including Smeaton's Pier. This might be a quieter, less stressful place if you have dogs.
✅ Final Word (and Some Handy Reminders)
So! To wrap up: if you fancy a memorable Bonfire Night with sea-air, fireworks reflecting off waves, the town of St Ives doing what it does best (laid-back, beautiful, community spirited), you’re in for a treat.
Just remember:
- Wrap up warm & bring layers
- Go early for a good spot
- If you’ve got a dog: check how comfortable they are around noise/crowds
- Maybe bring a torch for the walk back, and your sense of childlike “ooooh that’s pretty!” wonder
- Bring your own sparklers for the beach!
I hope you have a fantastic night!
Car Parking
The closest car park is the station car park, overlooking Porthminster Beach. This does get busy, so it is a good idea to get there early if you want a space.
The park and ride train is also in operation between St Erth and St Ives. If you are coming from out of town, this might be the best option.
