Golowan Mazey Day Penzance Cornwall

Golowan Festival: A Cornish Midsummer Celebration Like No Other

If you're looking for a festival that combines ancient Cornish traditions with vibrant community spirit, look no further than the Golowan Festival in Penzance.

Held annually at the end of June, this ten-day celebration is a highlight of Cornwall's cultural calendar.

What Is Golowan?

Golowan is a revival of the ancient Cornish midsummer festival, traditionally celebrated around the Feast of St John on June 24.

The modern version, reimagined in 1991, has grown into one of the largest community festivals in the southwest of England. It's a joyous blend of arts, music, parades, and local traditions, all set against the stunning backdrop of Penzance.

The 2025 Theme: "On the Crest of a Wave"

The theme for Golowan 2025 was "On the Crest of a Wave," which celebrated the power and beauty of Cornwall's coastline. There were giant sea creatures, surfers, pirates, and mythical sea monsters parading through the streets. It was a tribute to the sea's influence on Cornish culture and identity.

Key Events

Launch Party: The festival kicks off with a vibrant launch party.

Civic Parade & Feast of St John Service: A ceremonial procession through Penzance, culminating in a service at St John's Church.

Mazey Eve: The town comes alive with street performances, music, and the lighting of bonfires.

Mazey Day: The highlight of the festival, featuring parades, live music, and street entertainment throughout Penzance.

Quay Fair Day: A family-friendly day with markets, food stalls, and live performances.

Music & Entertainment

Throughout the festival, there is always a diverse lineup of live music, including traditional Cornish bands, sea shanties, and contemporary acts.

The Golowan Marquee, located at the Wharfside Maritime Car Park, hosts performances and DJ sets, creating a lively atmosphere by the harbor.

The Quay Fair Day markets offer a range of local produce, crafts, and street food.

Penlee Park  also has food stalls, a bar, craft stalls, and the new Tree Lounge hangout space for young people, organized by PZN Youth.
