Lidos Outdoor Swimming Pools St Ives Cornwall

Local Lidos: Jubilee Pool Penzance and Hayle Swimming Pool

Dive into History and Innovation at Jubilee Pool, Penzance

If you're looking for a refreshing dose of Cornish charm with a twist of bold innovation, let me introduce you to the one-and-only Jubilee Pool in Penzance. It's a place where seaside nostalgia meets modern ingenuity.

LOCATION MAP: Battery Rd, Penzance TR18 4FF

A Lido That’s Anything But Ordinary

The Jubilee Pool isn’t just your average seaside pool, it’s the largest seawater lido in the UK, holding about 5 million litres of water, and built in a distinctive triangular Art Deco design by Captain Frank Latham in 1935. Its curves and nautical flair make it a stunning architectural gem perched right on the sparkling cliffs of Battery Rocks

Saltwater with a Soothing Twist

The main pool is filled with seawater at high tide, giving you that invigorating ocean feel while staying in a safe, lifeguarded environment. The water’s often a little warmer than the sea outside, but still delightfully bracing.

For little paddlers, there’s a saltwater children’s pool, shallow and sun-warmed—just enough splash without the mighty waves

Geothermal Magic (Yes, Really!)

This isn’t just any lido… Jubilee Pool holds the title of the UK's first geothermal-heated lido. Thanks to a deep 410 m well (roughly the height of one and a half Eiffel Towers), natural saltwater is warmed to a cozy 28–30°C using ingenious heat pumps and eco-friendly tech, so you can enjoy floating bliss even when it’s chilly outside

The Heartbeat of a Community

This pool is powered by Penzance pride. After suffering storm damage in 2014, Jubilee Pool was brought back—from its Art Deco charm to improved facilities—thanks to local fundraising, grants, and a community share scheme that raised nearly £540,000 toward a £1.8 million restoration project.

In 2020, the geothermal makeover made year-round swimming possible and turned Jubilee Pool into a celebrated social enterprise, owned by 1,400 local shareholders and loved by visitors and residents alike.

More Than a Swim

Expect more than laps here. Jubilee Pool hosts AquaFit classes, adult swimming lessons in the main pool, yoga sessions on the terrace, and quirky events like sunset swims, poolside pizza nights, full moon dips, and even dance sessions on Sunday afternoons

Cafe

There’s also a cafe up on the terrace, where you can sip coffee with panoramic views of St Michael’s Mount and Mount’s Bay. Oh, and yes, dogs are welcome too if they’re part of the family outing.

Dog Friendly Swims

At the end of the season the pool opens up for dogs to swim in. Look out for this unique event!

Why You’ll Love Visiting

Whether you’re a lido lover, an architecture aficionado, or just someone who adores unique seaside spots, Jubilee Pool delivers. It’s a piece of living history, a community triumph, and a symbol of Cornwall’s embrace of art, resilience, and innovation. If you’re ever in Penzance, don’t miss the chance to take a dip in something truly extraordinary.
