Porthkidney Beach St Ives Cornwall

Porthkidney Beach - A Huge, Quiet, Dog Friendly Beach

If you’re looking for wide open space, golden sand, and breathtaking views, Porthkidney Beach is one of West Cornwall’s hidden gems. Just a short distance from St Ives, this beach offers a completely different atmosphere to the bustling harbour town – peaceful, wild, and wonderfully unspoilt.

Where Is Porthkidney Beach?

Porthkidney Beach sits at the mouth of the Hayle Estuary, stretching for nearly a mile between Lelant and Carbis Bay. At low tide, the sand seems to go on forever, making it feel almost endless compared to some of Cornwall’s smaller coves. From the beach, you’ll enjoy sweeping views across to Godrevy Lighthouse and down the coastline towards St Ives.

Porthkidney Beach is about a 5 min drive out of St Ives, just past Carbis Bay. Drive along the main road until you get to Lelant, Turn left at The Badger Inn and drive down towards the church. There is off road parking there.

Why Visit Porthkidney Beach?

  • Space to Breathe: Even in summer, Porthkidney never feels crowded thanks to its sheer size. It’s a perfect spot for long walks, beach games, or simply sitting and enjoying the scenery.
  • Dog-Friendly All Year: Unlike many Cornish beaches, dogs are welcome here at any time of year, making it a favourite with local dog walkers.
  • Beautiful Scenery: With dunes behind you, the estuary to one side, and the Atlantic Ocean ahead, it’s a beach that feels wild and close to nature.
  • Great for Walks: The South West Coast Path runs along the cliff tops, offering spectacular views across St Ives Bay.
