St Ives Raft Race Cornwall

The St Ives Raft Race: Splashing Fun and Community Spirit

If you're visiting Cornwall in August, mark your calendar for the St Ives Raft Race. It's a beloved tradition that turns the harbour into a riot of colour, creativity, and community spirit.

Organised by the St Ives Pilot Gig Club, this annual event combines friendly competition with charitable fundraising, all set against the stunning backdrop of St Ives Harbour.

What Is the St Ives Raft Race?

The St Ives Raft Race is a quirky and entertaining event where teams build their own rafts. They are often from unconventional materials. They race them around a set course in St Ives harbour.

The Raft Race Course

Participants paddle from the Sloop Slip to the Lifeboat House Slip to pick up a team mermaid or merman, before heading to Smeaton’s Lighthouse and returning to the Sloop.

When Does It Happen?

The race typically takes place in August, with the 2025 event taking place on Sunday, 10th August, starting at 5pm.

A Splash of Creativity

One of the highlights of the event is the imaginative costumes and themed rafts. Teams often dress up in creative outfits, adding to the festive atmosphere.

In 2025, instead of the traditional flour bombs, environmentally friendly seaweed 'jelly bombs' were introduced, which are biodegradable and become fish food, aligning with the event's commitment to marine conservation.

Raising Funds for Local Causes

Beyond the fun and festivities, the St Ives Raft Race serves a charitable purpose. Proceeds from the event go to local good causes, supporting community projects and initiatives in St Ives.

The entry fee for teams is £30 per raft, with registration typically closing by the end of July.

Who's in the Lead?

In recent years, the team "Hakes Wags" has been a formidable competitor, often defending their title with enthusiasm and skill. Their participation adds a competitive edge to the event, inspiring other teams to bring their best to the water.

Why You Shouldn't Miss It

Whether you're a participant or a spectator, the St Ives Raft Race offers a unique and entertaining experience. The event showcases the creativity and community spirit of St Ives, making it a must-see on the local events calendar. So, grab your waterproofs, bring your sense of humour, and join in the fun at the next St Ives Raft Race!
