If you’re craving a breath of fresh Cornish air away from the coast, Tehidy Woods and Lake is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on your itinerary.
Nestled between Camborne and Portreath, this expansive woodland and lake area offers a perfect mix of nature, history, and outdoor adventure.
A Walk Through History
Tehidy Woods is part of the Tehidy Estate, once the seat of the wealthy Basset family, who were prominent in Cornwall’s mining and political history. Over the centuries, the estate has transformed, but the woods remain a living legacy, with paths, trails, and viewpoints that hint at the area’s rich heritage.
Walking through the woods, you’ll notice remnants of old estate features, from historic stone walls to quiet corners that once served as part of the family’s landscaped grounds. It’s like stepping back in time while surrounded by nature.
Trails, Wildlife & the Lake
Tehidy Woods boasts over 250 acres of woodland, crisscrossed with footpaths, bridleways, and trails suitable for all ages and abilities. Whether you fancy a gentle stroll, a brisk walk, or a family day out, there’s a route for you.
Tehidy Lake
The centerpiece is Tehidy Lake, a tranquil spot perfect for picnics, photography, and birdwatching. Ducks, swans, and other wildlife are frequent visitors, making it an ideal escape for nature lovers.
You can also follow the circular trails around the lake, enjoying peaceful water views and shaded paths through the woods.
We like to visit Tehidy Lake for the kids to cycle and scoot around. It was brilliant when they were very small - it makes a good place for them to learn to ride.
The lake has lots of ducks, swans and birds on it, and around the lake are lots of very friendly squirrels.
There is free car parking at the entrance to Tehidy Lake.

North Cliffs
On the opposite side on the Tehidy estate is what is known as North Cliffs. This is a woodland with pathways, dens and a rope swing. It is a great place to explore and take the dogs.
During the spring there is always an amazing display of bluebells.
