Events and Traditions In St Ives

Throughout the year there are lots of events and traditions that take place in St Ives, Penzance and Hayle.

This list is by no means comprehensive, and I will add to it as and when I can.

February

St Ives Feast Day & Hurling The Silver Ball

Held on the 1st Monday in February, this is a real St Ives tradition.

St Piran's Day

Held each year on the 5th March, St Piran is the patron saint of Cornwall.

St Ives Kite Festival

This event is run by St Ives library and is held on The Island. Please check their facebook page for details nearer the time.


April

Good Friday Consols Pond Model Sailing Boat Event

May

May Day In St Ives

May Day is St Ives is always held on the 1st Monday in May. It involves local school children being chosen and May Kings and Queens and them parading with the band through town. They dance round the maypole in the harbour.

The Ancient Tradition Of Choosing The St Ives Mayor

This is held in mid May and takes place outside The Guildhall.


June

Hayle Carnival

Hayle Carnival is on this year (2024) on the 22nd June, 6pm-9pm. This year the theme is Myths and Legends.

Mid Summer Bonfire

Come up to Carnstabba Hill in Halsetown on the 24th June at 8pm for bonfire, singing and pasties.

Golowan Festival

Golowan and Mazey Day are on the 29th and 30th of June this year (2024). There will be parade, street performers and the fair on Penzance prom.


July

St Ives Biatholon

The St Ives Biathlon is the flag-ship event for the club and one of the highest profile events for the town. Drawing competitors from all over the British Isles, and with international entries, St Ives Biathlon saw over 350 people take part last year.

I'm not sure what date it is being held this year (2024) but I will update this page when I hear more.


August

St Ives Lifeboat Day

This year (2024) St Ives Lifeboat Day is being held on Thursday 15th August 10am till 4pm. There will be lots of demonstrations, stalls and entertainment to raise money for the RNLI.


September

St Ives September Festival.

Fifteen days of music and arts by the sea in St Ives!

Music, poetry, street entertainment, films, Open Studios, exhibitions, workshops, demonstrations, walks, talks and so much more at various venues all over St Ives.


October

Halloween Trick or Treating in St Ives

On the 31st October the residential streets are full of young children trick or treating. It is a lovely, family event and lots of homes put on quite a display!


November

Bonfire Night On Porthminster Beach

Each year, usually on the weekend closest to 5th November, there is the most spectacular fireworks display on Porthminster Beach. Everyone is welcome, so bring your sparkers.


December

St Ives In December

St Ives puts on lots of events over Christmas. From santa arriving by RNLI to lantern parades, carol singing and window displays.

Montol, Penzance.

Held on the 21st December in Penzance, Montol is a firey spectacle of pagan delights!

Boxing Day morning, crowds flock to Porthminster Beach to all jump in the sea on the blow of a whistle. It's all for charity and it gets bigger and better every year!
